The War State by Michael Swanson, a book review

He points out that the US had almost no armaments industry in 1939. They built it up first to keep Britain going, then expanded it enormously when the US entered the war itself. A group of Washington insiders decided that they did not want to let the US war industry wither away to nothing after the war ended. They were joined by lobbyists from the armaments industry. As you would expect they painted the Soviet Union as a powerful opponent, much more powerful than it really was. They wanted the US to triple its planned defense spending. Continue reading
